I started my first shooting for 2012 with this boy's birthday party.His smile is just infectious! Too cute to handle definitely.

Meanwhile, I would like to apologize for those unattended enquiry e-mails regarding photography packages in 2011 especially in the month of December.I was so busy attending to my daughter's preparation and orientation for standard 1 that I did not get to reply them.Fret not, you guys will still get the 2011 price and dates requested are slotted in my schedule.

Her last day in kindy!

When my daughter's teacher told me this morning that today is Iman's last day in school, it got my eyes almost teary.I thought she still needs to go to school tomorrow coz it's Friday right?
I know I should be happy coz I won't need to battle with her every morning in order to wake her up,but the thought of her entering Standard 1 next year, well, that's just scaryyyy.She's no longer that 3.95 kg baby that I gave birth to 6 years ago!

This is a picture of Iman and her Wu LaoShi (teacher).She was Iman's class teacher for 2 years and complimented that Iman can sing all Mandarin songs that she taught very well.Xièxie Wu LaoShi.

How to teach children to think outside the box

I was an English teacher teaching secondary students in my early working years.Eventhough I no longer teach now, my passion in the teaching profession never stops and when I have some teaching ideas to implement, my children will be the first to get the experience.Here is a great lesson plan that I found on the internet and would like to share with moms out there.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
By Ron Hendricks

This is one of my favorite lesson plans because it can be adapted to just about any age and skill level. It can also be used for small or large groups.

Materials: Cardboard box, whiteboard and marker, or blackboard and chalk.

Objectives: Students will explore and expand their English vocabulary, listen and participate in a story about facing challenges, use their thinking skills to solve puzzles, and learn and understand the American idiom “think outside the box.”

Introduction: (1-2 minutes)
Begin by placing a cardboard box on a desk. The children are usually curious, so show them the box is empty. Write the word “box” on the board and have the children say it with you.

Next, draw a stick figure of a little girl on the board and ask the children to help you give her a name. Then, begin the story…

Story: (5 – 10 minutes)
Once upon a time in China there was a little girl. She lived in a very small village at the foot of a very tall mountain. (Draw village and mountain and ask children to repeat the words.) In fact, this mountain was so tall that nobody from the village had ever bothered to climb to the top.

This mountain was so tall that the clouds (draw clouds) always circled the mountain and blocked out the sun (draw sun). The people of the village had never, ever seen the sun. In fact, the people of the village did not even know the word for “sun!”

One day, the little girl woke up very early. (For young groups or groups with little or no English, pantomime the girl waking up, etc.) She yawned and stretched. And then she had an idea. She said to herself, “Today I will climb the mountain. Today I will see what is at the top!”

She jumped out of bed and before anyone else in the village was awake, she began to climb the mountain. She climbed and she climbed and she climbed. And she climbed and she climbed and she climbed. She grew very tired and sat down to rest. “Maybe this is a bad idea” she thought. “Maybe I should just go home to my warm little bed and forget about climbing.”

But then, she stomped her foot and said “No, I said I would climb to the top and that is what I will do!” So on she climbed. The path got steeper and steeper, but still she climbed.

Soon she came to the beginning of the clouds. She stopped for a moment and thought. “Maybe I should just go home to my warm little bed and forget about climbing.” But then she stomped her foot and said, “No, I said I would climb to the top and that is what I will do!” And on she went.

Now, inside the clouds it was very cold and quite hard to see. It was strange and scary, but the little girl kept on climbing. As she climbed through the clouds she thought about her warm little bed, about her village and about her family. She started to worry about her Mother and Father.

“Oh! I better go back right now because my family will be looking for me,” she thought. But then she stomped her foot and said, “No, I said I would climb to the top and that is what I will do!” And then something wonderful happened…

As she stomped her foot, the clouds began to part and the little girl saw a beautiful blue sky! But that was not all, no, that was only part of it. Right in the middle of that beautiful blue sky was a big, round, orange, bright and warm…. ball!

She stood staring for a moment. She could not believe her eyes. She ran the rest of the way to the top of the mountain. And then she lay down in the warm glow of that bright, orange ball and fell fast asleep.

When she woke up, she was afraid. She had dreamed that her family and the people of the village were looking for her. So she jumped up and started to run. Down, down, down the mountain she ran as fast as she could.

When she reached the village, there was a large crowd of people gathered around her house. She saw her mother and father in the middle of the crowd and ran up to them. “Oh! There you are daughter! We were so worried! Where have you been?”

But the little girl did not stop to answer their questions. Instead she shouted, “Good news! Wonderful news! In the sky there is a big, round, orange, bright, warm, beautiful…ball!

The End

Questions: (3 to 5 minutes)
1. What do you think the people of the village said to her?
2. What do you think her parents said to her?
3. Why do you think they reacted this way?
4. Why do you think no one from the village had ever climbed the mountain before?
5. What do you think it means to “think inside the box?”

Exercises: (10 to 15 minutes)
Draw a square on the board and ask the students “What is it?” They will probably say “a square” or “a box.” Write their answers on the board. Now challenge the students to “think outside the box.” Go around the room asking each student “What is it?” Write each answer on the board. (e.g. a book, a TV, a desk, a piece of paper, etc.)

Repeat the exercise with other shapes (a triangle, a circle, a rectangle, etc.). Ask the children to explain their answers.

If there is time, divide the class into small groups. Have each group draw an everyday object, but from a completely new angle. For example, what would a door look like from a side view? What might a bus look like from underneath? What does a pencil look like from the pointy end? Have someone from each group draw their picture on the board.

Puzzle Handout: (5 to 10 minutes)
Alone or in pairs, have the children solve the puzzle on the handout. There are many printable handouts available on the Internet. Adapt the handout to the age and skill level of your class.

There is a classic “think outside the box” puzzle involving nine dots and four lines. It is sometimes called the Christopher Columbus Egg Puzzle. Look for it on the Internet.

Conclusion:
Hold the cardboard box in the air and ask “What is it?” Yes, it’s a box, but maybe it is more than that! Remind the students of the little girl who climbed the mountain and discovered the sun. Challenge them to “think outside the box” whenever they encounter difficult problems.

Terrific 2 Birthday Boy

My son celebrated his birthday on the 7th day of Ramadhan this year.He was born on 7 August 2009.My 7-8-9 baby.
We had a low-key celebration at home after Iftar.The birthday boy chose everything for his birthday.He knew what he wanted.He chose everything spiderman and I don't even know where he started to have this craze for the cartoon character.He doesn't watch the cartoon nor watch the spidey movie.He just loves Spiderman to bits besides his craze for cars of course.
A lot can be said about this boy.Alhamdulillah, development on track like any other 2 year olds I guess.I just hope he behaves well like he is now until he's grown up.Mama tak minta banyak.Jadi anak yang menyenangkan keluarga.Soleh.Itu je.

Adjusting to the Ramadhan routines

I have hundreds of pictures to process.Some from clients' event to upload here and some of my own from my recent trip to Sabah.

Ramadhan is all about finding time to squeeze in as much time for more Ibadah.Being a mom of two,working at the office, coming back to cook from scratch for the family and breastfeeding the soon-to-be-2 boy as per demanded,I feel knackered at the end of all these routines.One can go loco if one doesn't have the patience.I sometimes work when sleeping when the hands keep patting the eldest when she starts scratching herself (she has eczema remember?).

I'm definitely not a 'diva' in leisure if you think I am one.Anyway, a story won't be lovely enough without a picture so here's 'FAT' diva mama and kids with the prominent Mount Kinabalu in the backgroud.

Alhamdulillah, we arrived safely in KK airport.Charter a car and my husband drove about 2 hours to where we're staying tonite.Kinabalu Pine Resort,I fell in love instantly with this place.Our room faces Mount Kinabalu.Subhanallah.Spectacular view! I saw beautiful spots on the way and I can imagine having photoshoots here.I only have my kids as my models.Hopefully they can stand the very chilly weather.It's like spring in Edinburgh.The wind is so strong but I am not complaining.Till my next update! It's a Happy Tuesday!

This morning,after the usual weekday routine of waking my daughter from her sleep,asking her to take off her clothes before taking her bath,I experienced one unusual request from my daughter.
Today,right before I put my hands up for Subuh prayer 'takbir', my daughter said, "Nanti mama, tunggu sekejap.Iman nak solat sekali."
My heart instantly smiled and while performing my solah,I had tears of joy in my eyes.
This is her first solat subuh berjemaah with me.I couldn't ask for a better way to start my Happy Tuesday!

Sometimes, it's good to just model good behaviour to your child first instead of forcing them to do what you want them to do,no?
Alhamdulillah. I pray that this good habit continues.

This is the most colourful birthday I've attended so far.

A Hawaiian themed party was organised by Amelyna's supportive loving parents for her 5th Birthday last April.

It was held at a club in Melawati.The venue was just perfect for the theme as there was a swimming pool that looked more like a beach that day and coconut trees that gave a perfect tropical paradise ambience to celebrate Amelyna's birthday in the best Hawaiian style.

I love taking pictures outdoors. No need to fiddle with the external flash.Just shoot using the natural light available.

It is incredibly more challenging when taking a boy's picture.However, I was lucky enough to capture this boy's action on a tree.Well, he didn't climb the tree by himself.He managed to do it with his daddy's help.This session was a maternity session done on 4th of June with his mom, Lyana.
Yesterday, Lyana gave birth to another bounty baby boy.
Congratulations dear.
By the way, this boy's name is also Iman, just like my children's first name.

Fatihah's 10th Birthday

This is a long due post that should have been featured in this blog months back as the party was held in December 2010!

However, I owe only the entry here as I usually take 2-3 weeks to process my clients' albums/pictures and if there are few jobs happening in the same week, the latest for me to prepare every thing before delivery would be 1 month.

I still work full-time during the day as an Assistant Director by the way.That explains the not so much updated blog. Work at the office is also piling up but I try my best to work effectively in both fields i.e. office work and photography business.

I had the opportunity to capture Fatihah's sister's birthday last year.When her mom, Farah called and asked me whether I was free, deep inside I said to myself I must have done something right the first time for her to call me again. Alhamdulillah :). Anyway, here's some party pictures from Fatihah's birthday. Enjoy!

She's a cute short-hair princess because I said so

Recently when we went to my husband's family day, there was this one time when Iman had a conversation with my husband's auntie, Mak Cu Jannah.Iman called her 'Nek Cu'.This Nekcu doesn't potray that old mother hubbard grandma-looking-with fine-wrinkly-lines on the face mind you.This Nekcu is one young-looking grandma.She's the mother to the quadraplets that I wrote an entry previously.

Anyway, Nekcu was rushing on her deadline and was painting away, sitting far behind at the dining hall,almost hiding from the crowd so that she could finish her illustrations for an upcoming children's book.Then along came Iman with her cousin, Putri, mesmerised by Nekcu's beautiful handpainted illustrations of a boy and a girl.I think Nekcu offered to draw their faces.Putri had hers done first and asked for a princess crown for her picture.
Makcu told me later.While Putri's potrait was drawn, Iman had a little bit of conversation with her and this was their first official conversation as the last time this young grandma met her, Iman was still a little bounty baby.

Makcu told me later on that Iman had asked her to draw her potrait with long hair!

At this point, I was curious and eager to know why.

Makcu was quite surprise at first and asked why Iman wanted such because in reality,she has a very short hair.
Iman then explained to her that I would never allow her to keep her hair long.
Makcu asked why so?

Iman continued explaining to her Nekcu that I would cut her hair short every time her hair grows long because she will be scratching away every time her hair reaches her neck.

That brought tears to my eyes.

FYI, Iman has dark patches from her prolonged scratching around her neck and that's why having long hair is a no-no for her.It's itchy when it's hot so it is not suitable for eczema sufferers to keep their hair long.Unless you experience winter all year round.

Dearest Iman,

I really hope that you will get to keep your hair long when you're older.If your condition does not improve, do not fret my little short-hair pixie.You are truly beautiful inside out regardless of your hair length.

You'll always be my cute short-hair princess!

3 days 2 nights

We spent 3 days 2 nights in the jungle ( at Dusun Eco Resort, Bentong ) during the recent CNY holidays for my husband's family day.

Alhamdulillah, my kids survived leeches and mosquitoes.

First night activity: Pertandingan Bahasa Minang
Husband participated.Didn't win but his cousin who sat beside him won two flight tickets to Padang, Indonesia.

Second day activities: Outdoor games in the morning.
My daughter won few prizes.She got first place twice and second place in 'Pertandingan Cari Kasut Mama".I participated too.First place in "Pertandingan Kembar Siam", where particpants were required to tie their feet together, once conjoined we have to run forth and back to the finishing line.With my husband, we got third place in the same game.

Night activity: Pertandingan Nyanyian Karaoke
My husband and I participated and there were 12 performers that night singing all ranges of songs.I bagged the vocal and best solo performance prizes by singing Fantasia Bulan Madu.Didn't do any rehearsals mind you and I won myself 2 tickets to Maher Zain's Concert end of this February.Wehooo!

Final day: Prize giving ceremony
Apart from prize giving, all families took turn to have their photos taken.My MIL has 10 siblings including her which two of her sisters are twins.My husband's family are blessed with not only twin aunties, he has twin cousins, twin nephews and quadruplet cousins!

So, let's have a look at the event's pictures ya.

In August, she'll turn 6!

An article I found on the internet that is worth reading.

" Each time our children graduate from one stage to another (i.e. crawling - walking, preschool - school, highschool - graduation) we as parents are excited and a little sad as well. We want our children to grow up, but we reminisce about the good old days. I think those mixed feelings are normal for all of us. My question for you is - Are your children growing up too fast emotionally and socially? We can't stop their physical growth, but we can effect their emotional and social growth.

Our society is compressing childhood more and more to where children are not children for very long. We only have 18 years in our entire life to be children. We struggle as parents to keep our children innocent.

Children are not little adults. Often, children dress like adults in miniature. Children want to emulate their teen or adult heroes in dress and talk. As parents we are fighting a raging river in keeping our children young and innocent. Society, schools, and parents are pushing children to grow up too fast.

Answer the following questions to see if your children are growing up too fast?

1. Do your children want to wear clothing that is designed for much older children?

2. Do your younger children want to watch TV shows designed for teenagers? Do your teenagers want to watch adult TV shows that contain sex and violence?

3. Are the books your children are reading age appropriate?

4. Are your children involved in so many extra-curricular activities they have no down time to just explore or goof off?

5. Are your children losing that wonderful "childish sense of wonder or do they know it all?

6. Do your find your children are growing increasingly impatient and have to be entertained? Do they often say I'm bored?

7. Can you remember the last time you told your child you are not old enough to know about a certain topic and we will talk about it when you get older?

8. When was the last time you told your children, "No, you can't do that until your older or that outfit is not acceptable to wear in our family?"

9. Do you monitor what music your children listen to, computer games they play, internet sites they visit - are they age appropriate?

10. Do your children hang out with much older kids who are not a good influence?

Hopefully, these questions have caused you to stop and think about how quickly your children are growing up. Due to society's pressures you will have to make a concerted effort to keep your children innocent. There will be parent and child peer pressure to force your children to do things early. You may not be a popular parent when you say No to something 'everyone else is doing.' Parenting is not for the fainthearted or a popularity contest.

Childhood is a precious time and it is all ready much too short, keep your children innocent and protect their childhood. "

I'm so sorry.Mama is still adamant and won't get that thing called 'PSP' for you and I'm so sorry that I scolded you that day when your friend brought nail polish to school and painted your nails while waiting for your abah to fetch you.I had to buy nail removal and that's chemical.Chemical which wasn't kind enough to your skin.So,nail polish is a big NO for you too.

Izz Iskandar turns 2!

First of all, I would like to say thank you to a fellow photographer,Yuzie,for recommending me to Izz's mom.Yuzie couldn't cover the event so I came into the picture.Well, it's not the first time because before this, yuzie had also asked me to cover an event at a church, but I had to turn the offer down.Not that I am afraid of taking pictures in a church.I love challenges but the time wasn't that suitable and I was thinking more about where to perform my Maghrib prayer in between the event.

Anyway,when venturing into this photography business, I always pray that I will be working with a good client.Good here can mean a lot.For this party, the birthday mom of this boy had been very kind to me from the beginning until I delivered her dvd yesterday.Alhamdulillah.
I once had quite a 'stressful' experience with a client and it took me quite a while to get back my motivation to start positively taking pictures again.I learnt a lot from it too.

For Izz's 2nd birthday party, the parents decided to have it in Shah Alam although they live in KL.Why? because Izz's grandmother and other relatives live near the party venue.

I am considering KFC as my kids' birthday party venue because I think after seeing several birthday parties held in KFC, I saw the company had been very generous when supplying birthday goodies to their clients.

Okay enough babbling.Let's have a peek at Izz's memorable event.Izz is one jovial boy and he enjoyed his food most of the time during the party.

Yup, the event is tomorrow and I am just so thrilled!

Secured two tickets already and am going with a dear friend.

We will be staying at the hotel after the event.I mean my family will be staying there.

I hope I can update on the event happenings the soonest possible.

Eenie Minnie Naira turns 3!

Naira was such an active 3 year old kid that day.
I almost lost my breath trying to capture her pictures.She's super fast!
Anyway, Naira is indeed a very lucky birthday girl and even luckier to have a Minnie Mouse themed birthday for her 3rd birthday celebration last December.
She's truly loved by her family, relatives, small friends and friends to both of her parents too.
The party was really happening with laughters coming from the many people who came from the start till the end of the party.
